In the United States, the top cause of death is heart disease. While heart disease is very common, there are some lifestyle choices you can make that will help to reduce your risk. By switching to a personal doctor and establishing an individualized wellness plan, you’ll be on the path to better heart health. Here are four tips for decreasing your heart disease risk.
Regular Exercise
By integrating thirty minutes of exercise into your daily routine, you can help to prevent heart disease. This exercise does not have to be intense to have the desired effect. Brisk walking/light jogging will work just fine.
More Veggies, Less Saturated Fats
To push yourself toward optimal heart health, you’ll want to focus on eating plant-based meals that are filled with whole grains, lightly-oiled veggies, and fresh fruits. According to the National Institutes of Health, it’s been found that eating red meat daily triples the risk of heart disease. Saturated fats, which exist in high levels in red meats, can increase LDL cholesterol levels, in turn heightening your risk of heart disease. On the other hand, in reasonable quantities, mono and polyunsaturated fats are good for you. These fats are found in foods including avocados, nuts, and extra virgin olive oil. With healthy dietary habits and regular exercise, you’ll help to maintain a healthy weight. People with a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 typically have healthier blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
Reduce Stress
Daily life can be very stressful, especially if you’re juggling a demanding career with taking care of a family. But for your heart (and mental) health, it’s very important that you make a concerted effort to relax and let go of stress. Different methods work better for different people, but you may be able to reduce stress through seeing a therapist, getting out into nature, taking up yoga/meditation, or simply kicking back and reading a book.
Quit Smoking
Smoking cigarettes causes your heart to work harder to provide oxygen. One of the best things you can do for your heart health—and your overall health—is to stop smoking.
