As we head into the heart of flu season, now is the time to get your flu shot. This flu season is expected to be worse than usual, making it even more important that you take this simple precaution, especially if you have underlying health conditions that could cause complications. And while most people are able to recover from the flu just fine, it’s worth bearing in mind that an average of over 35,000 people have died from the flu each year over the past decade. Here are four reasons to get your flu shot.
The Flu Shot Won’t Give You the Flu
There are rumors out there that the flu vaccine will give you the flu. This simply isn’t true. If you get the flu shot and then get the flu, there are a couple of logical explanations. For one, it takes about two weeks for the vaccine to start fully working, so you’ll still be more susceptible to the flu during this interval. Also, even after the two-week mark, the flu shot isn’t 100% effective against all flu strains. So it is still possible to get the flu. However, the vaccine substantially reduces your risk of catching the flu, and even more importantly, it makes it much less likely that you’ll experience severe symptoms that could put you in the hospital.
Stronger Vaccine Available for Seniors
Seniors are at greater risk of complications from the flu, so if you’re a senior, it’s worth considering a stronger vaccine that is available to you.
Skip the Needle
If you have trypanophobia—a fear of needles—then you may be able to take a nasal flu spray vaccine instead, which is often taken by people under age 50.
Convenience
During flu season, you likely won’t even have to go to the doctor’s office to get your shot. Rather, a nearby pharmacy or grocery store will likely have the vaccine. Also, whatever type of insurance you have, it should cover your flu shot without any out-of-pocket charges.
